Skyline vs VMware HealthAnalyzer (PS delivered Health Check)

$

How is VMware Skyline differentiated compared to a professional services delivered Health Check (using VMware HealthAnalyzer)?

Is the Health Check service no longer of much value (unless you need a VMware specialist work with you to explain the findings/recommendations/justification)?

I understand that a PS led health check is high touch. I am mainly interested in the differences in the data collected/findings, analysis, and recommendations - since both seem to compare against VMware best practices. I know that the VHA does not look at log data or performance data whereas Skyline does.

VMware Skyline Operational Summary Report

Hi all,

I recently set up the Skyline collector in our first environment, and every time it runs we then get an email titled "VMware Skyline Operational Summary Report", letting us know an OSR is ready for download.

I'm likely missing something really simple, but I checked in the collector settings and online, but I can't find where to disable this email notification. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Cheers, Matt.

I'm fairly new to vRA/vRO and have been wondering about the GEF.  Does anyone have pointers to where I can find information on how to utilize it to interface with external APIs?

How do I uninstall Fusion 8.5 from my iMac (macOS Mojave)?

Is dragging the Fusion icon to the Trash sufficient?  Will that remove all the application files?

Does vSphere support remote desktop connection?

For example, if I open the PC with the vSphere software via remote desktop connection on my PC.

Will it cause problems?

Can anyone help me with the issue? The architectural diagram design is Checkpoint Security --- N3K --- Servers --- Storage.

Upon installation of the VCSA I encountered the issue, please see attached file.

Most of the time VCSA cannot access thru gui but can ping the IP. Is there any port that blocks on the server side?

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Fusion 11 on Mojave -- getting "Too many virtual machines"

I installed Fusion 11 on a new 2018 MacBook running Mojave. Many times when I try to start a VM, I get an error about "Too many virtual machines" even though I'm not running any VMware VMs. Sometimes, a VM will start fine (so far failing is the majority case). I've tried manually uninstall and reinstalling Fusion a couple of times. I also thought the issue might be Docker running concurrently, but that doesn't seem to affect the problem. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hi All,

I have a requirement to clone a running virtual machine for distribution using vRA. Current clone options under blueprints only provide ability to clone a vm only if its a template or has a snapshot of it. Is there any other way to achieve this?

Thank you.

HELP my keyboard doesn't work in my virtual machine!

$

I have a pretty straightfoward setup. Thinkpad T430 running XP SP 3. Used standalone converter to convert to VM and also resized it down onto a USB hard drive. When given the choice of export formats I chose VMware player 5.0.

Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Installed VMware Player 5.0. Opened saved VM. Keyboard AND mouse (trackpad) don't work in guest. Work fine in OS, I click in guest, and nothing, stuck at XP login screen.

Ok so I then installed VMware Workstation 9.0 (since updated to 9.0.2). Opened same VM. This time mouse works fine. No keyboard. I checked in Device Manager, It's "Standard PS/2 Keyboard". Can't install tools because I can't log in. I even setup a bluetooth keyboard, then clicked the setting to pass Bluetooth keyboards over. I can click in the guest, try to type on the Bluetooth keyboard, and nothing happens. But I can hit ctrl-alt, get focus back, and alt-tab away so I know my keyboard is working.

This is absurdly simple compared to what VMWare products are capable of. What is going on? I have googled endlessly and found NOTHING of assistance other than checking my device manager on the host.

Please someone help me, this is driving me insane. I've spent hours on what should be a straightforward operation. And I need to get back into that XP Machine!

\Edit: I want to add that when I select the boot into BIOS option I do have keyboard usage. It's something in the virtual machine for XP. But I don't know how to fix it and re-building is not possible.

Standby uplink not taking over when active got failed

Recently we built a new vsphere 6.5 platform with underlying compute as HPE synergy 12000 frame composable infrastructure and network as CISCO Nexus leaf and spine architecture.

In ESXi hosts we have VSS and vDS and each one mapped with 2 uplinks.

VSS with vmnic0 and vmnic1 for ESXi MGMT and vmotion traffic.

vDS with vmnic2 and vmnic3 for virtual machine and other production traffic.

When we set uplinks in active standby mode and bring down active one(vmnic0), the traffic is not failing over to the standby uplink (vmnic1) and we are loosing connectivity.

Even when we set two uplinks in active active mode, we are loosing connectivity. When we bring down vmnic1, then we are able to reach the VM. At any point the traffic is passing through vmnic0.

On HPE synergy end, LAG has been configured and in network switch also portchannel has been created according to the physical connections from

The same behaviour with vDS as well. Even we tried changing multiple nic teaming policies but no luck.

Don't know where the issue could be and struggling for 2weeks.

ESXi 6.7 Portgroup Weirdness

$

Recently I noticed that when I pull up a VM running on my ESXi 6.7 host that they have a yellow bar that states:

This VM is attached to a network portgroupLANthat doesn't exist. Edit this VM and attach it to a different network.

The weird thing is that the portgroup actually exists. But when I open the portgroup it shows no VMs assigned to it. When I pull up the console for the VM I confirmed that its network connection is actually working. But if I attempt to edit the VM it will auto switch the portgroup the the NIC to some other one.

I ended up making a new portgroup with the same VLAN and switched my VMs over to that new portgroup. Once they were all moved over and confirmed working I deleted the original portgroup that wasnt working. Then I went back to a VM and got that damn yellow bar again but this time it was saying that the new portgroup doesnt exists.

Any Ideas?

vSphere 6.0.0 not seeing 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller

$

host = ESXi  v6.0  build: 3380124

vSphere = 6.0.0  build: 3016447

0000:00:19.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation 82579V Gigabit Network Connection [vmnic0]

0000:03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller [vmnic1]

0000:03:00.1 Network controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller [vmnic2]

i added the 82571EB dual nic card to the host mobo. lspci command on ESXi shows it recognizes the card but under vSphere it only displays the management nic, vmnic0.

since ESXi recognizes the 82571EB card then i assume it has the correct drivers?

how do i get vSphere to see the 82571EB dual nic card so i can use it for my VM's

[!02.10.2016:update]

due to many host reboots while attempting to get a guest to use the passthru'd GPU geforce 770 all of a sudden i see the 82571EB showing up in Hardware->Network Adapters. i created "vSwitch1/VM Network 2" and added the dual ports to it. looks like i can now add them to my VMs.

ESXi software components show the nic driver as "e1000e driver 3.2.2.1-NAPI with firmware 0.13-4 5.11-2" which should work for the 82571EB. for whatever reason seems to be working now.

Vmware workstation 15.0.0 bug or so conceived?

В отличии от Vmware workstation 12, в Vmware workstation 15.0.0 очень долго обновляется картина (каждые 3-4 сек) в режиме просмотра всех установленyых VM.

Unlike Vmware workstation 12, in Vmware workstation 15.0.0, the picture is updated for a very long time (every 3-4 seconds) in the view mode of all installed VMs.

Будут ли исправлять это? говорят так и в VMW 14 тоже лагает.

Cannot load the users for the selected domain.

Hello,

We are upgrading to vCenter 6.5 at all of our sites (5 total).  6.5U2c with embedded PSC was deployed as the HQ site. 6.5U2b with embedded PSC was deployed at remote site and joined to the existing vsphere.local SSO.

When we log in to vcenter at the remote site and try to add domain admins from the corp domain to vsphere admins group we are getting "Cannot load the users for the selected domain."

HQ site does not have this issue. We are able to map corp domain users and groups to vsphere.local domain

We verified PTR records for all domain controllers to be present in DNS

Also when logging in to vcenter at the HQ with administrator@vsphere.local, we are seeing both vcenters in the web client, however clicking on the remote vc displays "You have no privileges to view this object or it does not exist."

When logging in to vcenter at the remote site with administrator@vsphere.local we are seeing both vcenters and are able to create objects in both, however permission mapping produces "Cannot load the users for the selected domain." error.

Any help is greatly appreciated

VMWare Kernel module updater fails

Hi,

after changes in my ubuntu 14.04 computer (mainly related to the gcc compiler - if I understand it correctly), starting VMWare fails.

In the first step after starting, I am asked to perform a Kernel Module Update:

Before you can runVMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.

I click on "install", are asked for my (sudo) password and get afterwards

Unable to start services.

See log file /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-12819.log for details.

This file contains the following information.

How can I resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Workstation 15 - isolated network with VLAN

HI,

I've found many blog posts and other resources on how to set up a VM in an isolated environment with e.g. ESXi but no reliable source for VMware Workstation 15 running on my local PC, running Win10 Pro x64.

Some guys wrote about setting this up using a second NIC others are talking about isolation from one VM to another VM running on same host only. LAN segements do not apply here, too.

My need is to set up a VM that uses a VLAN ID, e.g. 4, which is already used here to separate a Guest Wifi from a private LAN. OK this is a slightly different approach but I guess you know what I mean. At the end the VM should connect directly to the internet by-passing my firewall. The firewall has set up a second DHCP for Guest IP addresses, using VLAN ID 4.

I cannot describe this setup very accurately here now but this works perfectly well. My Guests get a different IP adresse and connect to the internet without having access to my private LAN.

Exactly the same setup is now needed for some VMs. I do have a second NIC port available in my local PC, however I actually do not use it. I've already activated it but this ends up by getting a second IP-address from the same range of my first NIC.

My idea was to assign a VLAN ID 4 to this 2nd NIC and handle all traffic from the VMs that should not access my private LAN. Of course this does not work so far.

My PC is connected to a switch which can handle port base VLAN as well as 802.1q.

Any hints to get such a setup running?

thx,

Michael
