Configuring disks to use VMWare Paravirtual SCSI adapters (1010398)

Hey there!

I have an ESXi host where a few of my Windows 2016 w/ SQL Server 2016 are getting a lot of the errors like this in the Windows System Event Log:

"Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued"

I found the main article on this here:

"Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued" error in the Windows event log (2063346)

VMware Knowledge Base

but found that the site mentioned does not have the LSI_SAS drivers for Windows 2016, or anything since Windows 2008 R2, So I decided to try the route mentioned in this article:

Configuring disks to use VMware Paravirtual SCSI (PVSCSI) adapters (1010398)

VMware Knowledge Base

But here they keep mentioning using VSphere, but I can't connect to this ESXi 6.5 host with VSphere.  So I tried to work my way through the step by step instructions in this article using the Web Based ESXi configuration tools.  The part I'm having a problem with is on Step 2 under "To configure an existing Windows boot disk to use a PVSCSI adapter.  When I create a new disk, it doesn't give me an option on what SCSI controller to which I can connect it.  Has anyone else had success doing this in the ESXi 6.5 guest settings tool?

Please help, thanks.

VMnet8 Questions on Fusion 11 (MTU and NAT)

Hello,

I am running fusion 11 on Mojave. Does all of the host traffic get routed through vmnet8 when fusion is running?  I've noticed a huge slowdown of SMB transfers after fusion launches and the vmnet1 and vmnet8 interfaces appear in ifconfig.

Also where in the file structure can I find the settings for vmnet8? I would like to change the MTU.

Thanks in advance

I need to place my *.sh file into /BIN folder of yet installed ESXi host but the file disappears after reboot. Is there any way to keep the file there? The host is ESXi 6.7 free licensed. I would like to avoid creating the new customized installation.

Workstation 14 Pro Update failure removed existing install

i ran the latest update to VMware Workstation 14 Pro and the update failed.   The problem is it completely deleted my existing install.

I'm just wondering if there is any chance of recovering any of the data before I just install the latest version ?  Virtual Machines etc.

I had not used the software in a couple of months prior to this failure.

I believe the version update was 14.1.5 but I am not sure.   I am running it on a Windows 10 Pro workstation.

WS15 & VCSA 6.7U1 OVA import fail

When importing VCSA 6.7U1 into VMware Workstation 15 I can get everything with phase 1 import to work and successfully enter into the phase 2 portion.  During phase 2 it gets up to around 63% and fails to start content library service which then invalids the entire install.  I've tried DHCP and static with correct fwd & rev records.

I even tried importing VCSA 6.7U1 into a nested ESXi 6.7 on WS15 and I get the same failure to start content library. Seems to me like a timeout issue in either case.

My WS15 laptop is Windows 10,  i7 Intel, 32G RAM and SSD.

Any ideas?

Plug in device connection selection

It used to be that I would plug in a thumb drive to my Mac with VMWare running and it would ask if I wanted it connected to the Mac or Windows. It no longer asks.  How can I restore that question? I've already seen the shared file demo on VMWare, and that's a good backup, but this is more direct if possible.

Thanks.

Small Developer Team of 1 ESXI 6.5

Hello,

So I am a small developer and was looking at buying possibly a gen 8 or 9 HP Proliant dl360. I am seeking one to run a max of 15 instances, this all because I went from a affordable 15$ a month on instances on the cloud to about 95$/month. But a couple of my instances are heavy resource users so I figure its cheaper buying a slightly used server and setting something up physically. My question is can someone help me find out what ESXI i'd need to run and also how much cost would I be looking at?

I did however do some testing with ESXI 4.0 with my old poweredge 2950 but it ran like garbage with newer OS's. I got the jist of VM Ware but still would like some knowledgeable VMWare users to let me know what i'd be looking for.

Also like I said I am only a Dev of 1 so I dont need any crazy features just basics. Able to run linux and windows server OS.

Thanks in Advanced!

vCenter 6.7 fresh vCenter Server Appliance install with an embedded Platform Services Controller on a 6.5 ESXi host.

Stage 1: Deploy appliance - Completed successfully

Stage 2: Configure appliance - Completed sucessfully

When I try to log in as root on the VMware Appliance Management web:5480 page using the IP address of the server, I receive the error. Unable to login, NOT the error Unable to authenticate user. I can successfully log in using the console with root credentials. Used a variety of browsers and validated security settings. Any ideas?

Hi,

I'm trying to import a OVA template using the Host Client version 1.5.0. I can install the VM using ISO files, but, I have no success when I'm trying to import a template. I'm receiving this error message: Failed to deploy VM: postNFCData failed.

Not sure if I'm missing something.

Thanks,

NSX edge tenant / DR scenario

Hello,

Let say that we lose the datastore that host the nsx edge for the tenant, how can recovery the nsx edge ?

We are looking for a solution in order to get back the nsx in this type of scenario.

We have try to present a new datastore in the existing storage policie and try "redeploy" option on the nsx edge, it is not working. It seems that vCD need to access to the existing nsx edge for redeployment.

Pull (or set?) UUID via REST API?

Is it possible to query the UUID of a VM via the REST API?

I assume that it's a value in the BIOS, but I don't see an interface to query that. If there isn't a way, is it in the pipeline?

vmware converter hung at 98% converting rh7.6 v2v

I have a Redhat 7.6 on Rhel.  I am trying to convert the machine to vmware using the 6.2.0 version of vmware converter.  I have done this repeatedly with little problems when the OS is 7.5 5 months ago.

Here are the steps that I do prior to starting the conversion...

1.  Make sure root login is enabled via ssh

2.  Make sure connection between the windows machine running the vmware converter, the vmware cluster tp be hosting the newly converted machine and the original rhel based redhat machine is good.

3.  Make sure all unnecessary processes running on the machine have been stopped.

4.  Make sure /var/tmp is unmounted

5.  Make sure no processes are using /tmp

6.  Remount /tmp as executable (mount -o remount,exec /tmp)

Start up the converter, set ip options, along with helper ip.

The converter chugs along till it gets to 98%, and the last message in Task Progess is "Creating initial ramdisk".

The task times out giving an error of

"SysCommandWrapper: Error encountered in SysCommand: SysCommand failed to wait /usr/lib/vmware-converter/chrootAndExec.sh to terminate"

I seem to have no problems with any 7.5 machine, but this happens on all the 7.6 machines that I have tried.

I have searched the error log file and google for anyone else having this error with 7.6 with no luck.

Any comments or hints of action would be helpful.  If I am posting in the wrong place, let me know the proper place to ask my question.

TIA

Trigger UEM Refresh Remotely

Hello all, I'm curious if there is a way to remotely trigger a UEM refresh for shortcuts or printers or other things?  I was thinking of having a way, as an administrator, to refresh the client's desktop remotely.  An example use case would be, creating or editing a shortcut with UEM and getting it to the user's desktop without them logging off or even doing anything on their end.

Currently on UEM 9.2.1

Thanks in advance.

Mouse (horizontal) wheel is always triggered to the LEFT on Linux Host and Windows Client, even if there is no Horizontal Wheel.

It took me a while to get this right.

When a VM has usb.vbluetooth.startConnected= TRUE,  then mouse wheel will always be triggered to the left.

Host is Ubuntu 18.10 with multiple kernel tested from 4.15 to 4.20.  With multiple DE.

This happens on Windows 10 and 7.

Using the tool QiPress to display mouse events I caught the issue.

I also tried on a Ubuntu 18.10 and evtest to watch the events and the issue does not happen.

This is a hard to notice issue as most applications does not care for horizontal scrolling/mouse wheel.

I just notice on some specific place on Lightroom which uses it for zoom.

Changing usb.vbluetooth.startConnected to "FALSE"  works around the issue, but will probably make bluetooth unusable.

Can more people confirm this issue?

sshd_config operation not permitted

I have ssh'd into the ESXi host and opened the sshd_config file with vi added some info, then I go to save my changes and with :wq! but then I get 'sshd_config' operation is not permitted.

The default permissions on the file was 644, I even tried changing it to 600, but not change.

I have loaded the DoD STIG VIB, so not sure if that makes any difference or not.

Create an Alarm

I'm trying to add an alarm, to my appliance (Version 6.5 Build 11347054), but it's not working.  I have tried the manual way, but it will not let me do this:

From the vSphere Client select the vCenter server at the top of the hierarchy and go to >> Alarms >> Definitions >> Right click in the empty space and select New Alarm. On the General tab provide an alarm name and description, Select vCenter for alarm type and "Monitor for specific events occurring on this object", check "Enable this alarm". On the Triggers tab click Add three triggers and in the event column enter "vim.event.PermissionAddedEvent", "vim.event.PermissionRemovedEvent", and "vim.event.PermissionUpdatedEvent" for the three triggers and click OK."

I only have drop down options, no where can I add the triggers as specified.  So I went to Google and found a script over at blog.ukotic.net.  But it does not seem to be working.  I'm getting an error, "The object 'vim.ManagedEntity:{vcenterappliance_name}' has already been deleted or has not been completely created"
