AVG, Windows 10 VM crashes

$

Last week I began having massive problems with VM's crashing my WIndows 10 host and thrashing my C: drive to the point I had to use disk images to regain a bootable machine.

After days of trial and error I've narrowed it down to AVG Internet Security, ver: 19.6.3098 build 19.6.4546.439 which is the most recent build as are the definitions in use.

I'm assuming, yes - I know, I shouldn't, that one of the recent updates to AVG is the cause of this problem.

I'm currently moving to another AV product but I've relied on AVG for decades and I'm reluctant to do so.

The VMware host, VMware® Workstation 15 Pro, version 15.1.0 build-13591040 runs without any problems, even with AVG running. But moments after attempting to load a VM, ANY VM, I get the "sad face" blue screen and Windows goes into recovery mode but can't. The only fix is to restore a disk image.

None of the software involved is installed on my C: drive; AVG, VMware or my VM's. HELP!

Short of tossing AVG, which I'll do if needed, does ANYONE have any suggestions about what's going on and how to fix it?

What is the max supported latency between vCenter and remote hosts? We have hosts that are randomly disconnecting at sites with greater than 200ms of latency.

Hi guys,

I have a problem with a FC card. One vmhba is offline and configured as LPORT. But in Qlogic Bios Utility all vmhba are configured in "point to point".

I didn't find anything else on the ESXi configuration about this issue. Someone have an idea ?

This card is a DualPort on HP Blade. The vmhba2 works fine but not vmhba1

Cannot access esxi host

Hi guys,

I recently installed esxi 6.7 on HP DL380 G10. I have done setting up ip address and ping to gateway was successful. Then I checked if the port 443 was open by issuing ’telnet ip_address 443’ from my pc and it was successful. But I cannot access the web gui when I put ‘https://ip_address’ or ‘https://ip_address/ui’.

there is a firewall between my pc and the esxi host. But since the port 443 is open, there seems to be no issues with firewall. where can I start with to find out the reason?

Hi,

I'm running Fusion 8.5.10 for Mac. Whenever I attempt to copy between one VM to another I get the rainbow wheel in Fusion for around 2-3minutes. The VM's themselves still function. In fact i can see see graphic activity on both.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Windows Sandbox Feature enables windows defender credential guard feature sets. Does not play well with VMware Workstation

Hello Vmware community;

I have concluded that windows sandbox does not work with VMware workstation in windows 10 build 18329.1.  Enabling windows sandbox also enables windows defender credential guard features which causes the following error when trying to power on a virtual machine in vmware:

"VMware Workstation and Device/Credential Guard are not compatible. VMware Workstation can be run after disabling Device/Credential Guard."

Upon searching you will find Vmware Knowledge Base Article 2146361 which references a link to the following Microsoft KB article:

Manage Windows Defender Credential Guard (Windows 10) | Microsoft Docs

Neither document mentions that the windows sandbox feature enables credential guard features.  Here is how to disable credential guard after uninstalling windows sandbox: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2146361

1. Hit the windows key+s for "Search" and type "windows security settings" and press enter. Navigate to:

Windows Security -->> Device Security -->> Core Isolation -->> Memory Integrity -->> Select Off

2. Hit the windows key+r for "Run" and type "gpedit.msc" and press enter. Navigate to:

Local Computer Policy ->> Computer Configuration ->> Administrative Templates ->> System - Device Guard ->> Turn on Virtualization

Double click that .... and select "Disable" ...

3. Go to Control Panel ->> Uninstall a Program ->> Turn Windows features on or off ->> (uncheck/turn off): Hyper-V & Windows Sandbox.

*Click OK

*Select Do not restart.

4. Type the following cmds in cmd prompt.. to Delete the related EFI variables from the BCD file...

Launch cmd as administrator...

bcdedit /create {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} /d "DebugTool" /application osloader

bcdedit /set {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} path "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\SecConfig.efi"

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} bootsequence {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215}

bcdedit /set {0cb3b571-2f2e-4343-a879-d86a476d7215} loadoptions DISABLE-LSA-ISO,DISABLE-VBS

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

5. Restart your system ...

This howto has been kinda, sort of covered in various internet searches.  But no one seems to detail clearly how windows sandbox enables windows defender credential guard.  I found this out upgrading to window 10 build 18329.1. I hope this thread is helpful to someone.

VRA blueprint cpu/mem/disk limit snapshot during VM creation

$

Hi all,

I understand that when you create a VM under a blueprint with a certain mem/cpu/disk limits, eg. mem=1.4 GB, cpu=1-8, disk max=1TB, VRA will create a snapshot of those limits when the VM is created. So even if you increase those limits in the SAME blueprint, they don't change. If you try to reconfigure the VM beyond those initial limits even though the VM blueprint have new limits, it will fail.

Question, how do you find out from REST API what are those snapshotted limits for each VM? Thanks in advance

vcenter 6.0, common logging service health alarms

I am managing two vcenter 6.0 instances. Each is showing a "vmware common logging service heath"  alarm, one is red, the other yellow.

I read an article here VMware Knowledge Base  and here https://virtualnomadblog.com/2018/03/01/vcenter-6-0-vmware-common-logging-service-health-alarm-resolved/  , expecting to have to set the log rotation.

a check shows the cloud-ram-size.log is not big. Around 100 MB (red alarm) on one instance and 25M (yellow alarm) on the other instance. There is 10GB storage available and 40% free. What are the threshholds for these alarms? What action should i take?

Connect Shared Dell Smart Card Reader Keyboard

Host Image:

  • 6.7.0 Update 2 (Build 13006603) / ESXi-6.7.0-20190402001-standard (VMware, Inc.)

Guest Settings:

  • Guest OS - Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit) VBS Enabled
  • Compatibility - ESXi 6.7 U2 virtual machine
  • VMware Tools - Yes/Current
  • USB Controller - USB 2.0

Our domain has Smart Card enforcement enabled for all workstations through group policy. Deploying our Windows 10 enterprise image to local VMware Workstation Pro (licensed), I can connect Shared Dell Smart Card Reader Keyboard to the VM to be able to log in through the console. We have now purchased a machine to have as a stand-alone host for Hypervisor. Whether I use browser console, VMRC, or VMware Workstation Pro remotely connected to the server, I am unable to connect the Dell keyboard for smart card logon. Using RDP I am able to log in normally, but I would prefer having users log into the web console and just give them the VM name to use instead of having to fish the IP address each time. Would a remote connection to the host be preventing a shared keyboard (technical limitation), or is it a limitation of being not connected to a vCenter server? Is there an advanced setting I am missing that I have not been able to find any documentation on so far?

Esxi 6.7u2

"Management traffic" option for port?

$

What does the "managment traffic" option for a kernel port actually do?  I've seen this question asked all over, but never answered?

I can still use vSphere client to get into a host when this is not checked.  Since there are other options for FT or VMotion traffic...and it's not used for the client.....what does checking "management traffic" under port options actually do?

Thanks!

Datastores - Get info on all types

We have some datastores that are iSCSI, some are NFS, some Fibre and some local attached SAS.

Through PowerCLI on an ESXi, how can I get all info of the datastores like if it's iSCSI get me the target server it's connected and the IP it is using or or if it's an NFS get me the host server it is connecting to and the folder path and username used etc, bus path of the rest and the WWN interface of the Fibre datastore..

Thanks

Get Virtual Disk SCSI-IDs

$

Hi,

Is there an easy way to get the SCSI-ID of a VMs Virtual Disks displayed in a Get-VM | Get-Harddisk output?

So far I could not find a way to retrieve the SCSI-IDs for the Virtual Disks in the same output as "Get-HardDisk".

It is simply not available, but it my opinion it should be there out of the box.

I managed to get the SCSI-IDs of the Virtual Disks by importing this function and then run the command Get-VM <MyVM>  | Get-VMDisk,

but I don't like the output really and I would rather like to have an Object "SCSI-ID" in the "Get-Harddisk" cmdlet output.
