General questions - VCSA 6.7 with SRM 8.1

Hi friends,

I did an SRM training, but as I've never used it in practice the knowledge ends up being outdated.

The training was done with a Windows vCenter and with vReplication and did not address the pluguin part of the storage.

I want to use SRM with VCSA 6.7 and I will have to use pluguin for Dell EMC storage.

Doubts:

- Is there SRM 8.1 that is supported for VCSA 6.7 appliance as well? Or will I have to use a Windows VM?

- If you do not have the SRM appliance, can I use VCSA 6.7 and SRM installed on a windows?

- How do I enable SRM in VCSA 6.7?

- Is the SRM pluguin for storage installed on the same SRM server? Or is it on another server? Or is it in vsphere esxi?

Thank you.

L.S.

We have a server running VMWare Workstation 7.1 and VMWare Player 3.1.4 build 385536 on Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2 Enterprise edition and very often run into the error above when trying to boot several VMWare machines. (a VMWare.log has been included where the full error is visible.). Some VM's seem to boot normally, where others have this issue.

The VMs are located on drive E of the physical machine. They are configured with 2 GB RAM and a 15GB pre-allocated harddrive. Drive E of the physical machine has over 300GB of free space.

The physical machine has 32GB RAM on board and at the time of the error over 30GB RAM was free.

The physical machine has a 40GB page file configured on drive C, over 20GB of free space still exists on that drive

The VMWare workstation config.ini has also been included as an attachment.

It has a few non-standard settings that were made to dramatically improve disk performance on the VM's

I've read in previous topics that a disk defrag might help, but this does not seem to solve the problem.

Esxtop in batch mode

I need to collect specific information by using esxtop.

Based on what I read in several sites, I started using esxtop intractively, I used F to select the information I need (a limited subset of available information) and I saved a configuration file by using W to salve my configuration file.

Then I started esxtop in batch mode with a command like:

esxtop -b -d 5 -n 5 -c <filename> > output.txt

However, I get a large amount of data and I cannot limit the content of my file output.txt to the information I need.

I repeated the test using the default file name for the configuration file and a custom file name, with no result.

Am I missing any relevant point?

Am I making any mistake?

Where can I locate step-by-step instrictions?

Again USB passthrough issues

Hi all,

I'm running ESXi 6.7u2 on a Supermicro mini server.

I had no issue with older ESXi releases but with this one here I can't manage to see USB devices available for passthrough in the UI.

I've followed another discussion where a bug was fixed with 6.7u1 but still I can't manage to make USB devices seen by the VM.

I've tried adding a USB controller, 2.0 and/or 3.0 but still nothing.

through the CLI the device is seen (see below) but it doesn't appear available in the UI (it's all greyed out)

Any clue??

thanks!

esxcli network stats & dropped rx counters

Hello,

I am troubleshooting some network issues within our ESXi environment and found some conflicting information. If I run "esxcli network port stats get -p 33554440" the output shows 1.8 million dropped rx packets. If I run "esxcli network nic stats get -n vmnic0" it shows 0 dropped rx packets. Which counters should I believe? Do I really have 1.8 million dropped packets on my vmnic0 interface?

VCSA 6.5 does not send alerts to e-mail

Hi,

I have the following problem. Currently, I installed a new Vcenter Server Appliance in version 6.5.0.14000. I can not cope with sending notifications via VCSA that does not work.

My external mail server for sending notifications works fine. Notifications from other devices affect my inbox.

I would also like to emphasize that our mail server (mail.companydomain.com) is open to the IP address and ports of the VCSA server.

Configuration in the VCSA GUI is in the instructions (Vcenter General-> Mail) in the fields are filled in as follows:

mail server - mail server address (mail.companydomain.com),

mail sender - (helpdesk@companydomain.com)

When using the VCSA console, the command:

echo "Subject: sendmail test" | sendmail -v my.email@companydomain.com

the mail is forwarded to my mailbox.

This is how my sendmail works in VCSA. Where to look for a problem?  It's need any additional settings?

best wishes,

Suppress/Ignore pressing Enter after 'ESXi has been installed successfully' during scripted installation

For an off site location we've created a custom-image with the kickstart file on the cdrom (iso)

ks=cdrom:/KS_CUST.CFG bootproto=static ip=xx.xx.xx.xx nameserver=xx.xx.xx.xx netdevice=vmnic0 ...

During the installation we get an error that there is no answer by DHCP in that location (intented) and the installer actually goes on by itself without human intervention (it says: wait or press enter to contine)

However, at the end of the installation there is a notice/alert-box say, that

"ESXi 6.7.0 has been installed successfully."

...

There were warnings. See log files

                         Press <Enter> to continue

We would like to avoid hitting enter at this point. Has anybody overcome this issue - we know there is no DHCP so it would be a bonus to save this human intervention at that part of the installation.

Vielen Dank

Start Menu Windows 10 1803

Hi,

I am having some difficulties getting UEM to personalize Windows 1803 start menu. I have a custom layout. First time login, the layout is set properly for all users. Any subsequent logins the start menu layout is missing apps. It is the same exact apps. Removing UEM and the layout works fine. It is the organization custom layout; therefore, I must deploy it. Anyone had any luck with 1803 and higher.

un preparing the vds_edge( edge cluster ) from the vxlan and preparing again the edge cluster for the vxlan with the vds in the production cluster. Tenants are deployed through the VCD 9.7 and cross NSX 6.4.3 is used.

In our environment we have ESXI version 6.5.0 update 13635690 , NSX 6.4.3 and VCD 9.7.0.13634630. We have tenants that are deployed through the VCD. In our production data centre we have two cluster IAASEMEDGE101 and IAASEMPRD101 both have their separate VDS and prepared for the VXLAN traffic respectively. Now the requirement is to have one vDS across both the cluster. As the NSX environment is cross so we are using the UDLR feature from the VCD. The ESG’s are deployed through the VCD and using the external vxlan network that is created on vDS in edge cluster. So in the change the vDS in edge cluster will be unprepared for vxlan, the host uplinks will be connected to the vDS in the payload cluster and then the edge cluster will be again prepared for the vxlan.
Now the questions related to this change are
1- As it is a cross NSX environment with VCD which site to do first the Primary or the secondary. Keeping in mind that the tenants are deployed through VCD and we are also using the UDLR from the VCD
2- As the VCD is using the external networks which are basically logical switches created on the vds_edge. Can we edit the properties of the external network and change the logical switch that is on the vds_edge to the logical switch which is on the vds_payload. Note: as there is a transport zone that is spanning both the clusters, so when a logical switch is created it is created on both the vDS. ( what will be downtime if the external network is change or impact)
3- Is there any other dependency on the VCD that needs to be looked upon other than the external network and what will be the proper steps to remove the external network dependency in VCD
4- The NSX Edges that are using the vxlan interfaces. What is the proper step to remove the VXLAN dependency either by starting all the configuration from the scratch, or by vmotion to the production cluster, do the change and then vmotion it to the old cluster or by redeploying? Which is the safest method.
5- what will be the effect on the UDLR that is deployed through the VCD how can we vmotion or redeploy to another cluster and what will be the effect on the VCD
6- what will be the effect on the UDLR that is deployed through the VCD how can we vmotion or redeploy to another cluster and what will be the effect on the VCD. The HA status of all the UDLR that are deployed from the down. The UDLR is not active at the secondary site. If we vmotion it to the other cluster what will be the effect and vice versa.
7- Any effect on the transport zone.?

We did this change in our other cloud last year but at that time there were no UDLR configured at that time and no ESG’s were deployed through the VCD. Now this time we have tenants that are deployed through VCD and using UDLR ( which is also configured through the VCD).

Linked mode broken since vCenter 6.5 Appliance Upgrade

G'day,

We recently upgraded from 6.0u3 to 6.5 vCenter Server appliance with embedded PSC but the enhance linked mode is broken at the primary site and permission errors appear when the secondary site tries to access features in the primary site.

The SSO username and password is the same on both sites and the NTP time and date settings on the appliances is the same.  In the vSphere web client the primary site cannot see the second site, but the secondary site can see the primary:

Primary site:

Linked mode at primary site not showing as healthy:

Secondary site:

Linked mode looks healthy:

Is there a way we can remove and re-add the enhanced linked mode for the primary site to resolve this issue?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, we are looking to fix TLS vulnerability reported on TCP Port 5489. I guess the port is used with update manager. Can we have the port blocked at GI firewall level without any impact as we are not using vCenter update manager. Thanks in advance for your response.

Custom Properties not being passed in Event Broker payload? [Permissions?]

$

thank you for taking the time to read this post!

We recently ran into an issue where custom property values are not getting passed to vRO via the event broker/subscriptions. In our case we have a VM provisioning blueprint with a custom form. It has a few elements (check boxes and text fields) on it that take user input and store the values into custom properties. These properties get passed via the payload to vRO and we take actions on their values.

While this has been working great for the our team, once we hand the form off to a non-administrative vRA user to consume, the properties are sent, but the user inputted values are not. Initially I thought there was something wrong with our blueprints so I recreated the blueprint only adding a few raw elements to test the payload. (shown below)

Properties:

Blueprint/custom form:

We then have a event subscription to trigger when a VM is successfully provisioned.

As I mentioned above, this configuration works great for an administrative user. If a normal user with permissions to simply run the blueprint requests a VM, the properties values are not passed. Here are the log runs which show the payload properties for admin vs non-admin:

admin user:

The values that do get passed in both log runs are static defined in the custom property definition. The values that are missing are user inputted values.

Any idea why we are seeing this behavior? Ideally the properties would get passed even for a standard user.

How do I delete -ctk.vmdk files left behind by VMDR?

I had some issues and need to start over with VMware Disaster Recovery . At the moment I don't have a VMDR appliance but some of my VMs have -ctk.vmdk files. How do I get rid of them?

I found this article and followed the instructions. It "fixed" the VMs in question but the -ctk files didn't get removed by the delete all snapshot function.

Thanks.
