Any examples of subscription conditions that use properties

$

Hello VMware community,

I was curious if y'all knew of any examples of subscription conditions that use properties.

Our team would like to use a workflow subscription with event topic 'Machine provisioning' and use properties from a property group to make a decision to run a vRO workflow or ignore it. The user selects the value of property 'ouString' and the workflow creates a computer account in a specific OU.

I've used the following to try and reference that property: (These are fields that are accessible from the 'Conditions' tab of a workflow subscription)

Data > Machine > Properties > Name

     EQUALS ouString

     EQUALS "ouString" (which is entered as "ouString")

     CONTAINS ouString

     CONTAINS "ouString" (which is entered as "ouString")

Data > Machine > Properties > Value

     EQUALS foo

     EQUALS "foo" (which is entered as "foo")

     CONTAINS foo

     CONTAINS "foo" (which is entered as "foo")

We cannot run this on every VM and those attempts to reference that 'ouString' property name or any of the possible values has not triggered the specified workflow. The 7.0 documentation doesn't cover how to use properties as conditions and all the blogs posts I have looked through are using 'Run for all events' and ignores the glaring problem associated with running 20+ workflows for each VM when each state occurs.

Thinapp Firefox ESR Issue - The address isn't valid error

Hello Guys,

I have recently struggling with Firefox ESR thinapp, actually it already happened in previous version 38.8.0 ESR, but I was able to fix that issue by this guide :

1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste pref and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.preferences.inContent preference to switch it from true to false

But since FF is changing the policy as stated in this from them :

Firefox 38 switched from a pop-up Options dialog to an "in tab" options page. Some users are finding that it doesn't work for them, but so far we haven't identified the reason - and this - Note: I don't know whether that will be in Firefox forever or is a transitional feature. As you've probably noticed, the long-term trend is to remove things that pop up.

It looks it already came and I am not able to fix that (should be since version 42) for the last 45.2.0 ESR version in thinapp. When I install the FF, all works, but when I get the packaged FF by thinapp, then it does not work. All like about:home, about:preferences, about:newtab etc. command does not work, even some https links.

I have tried to thinapp it by also older version, but no success. Currently we use last 5.2.1 .

Would you know what can be wrong there with FF? Anyone of you have the same?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Pakcage.ini attached

How to prompt for vmhost name?

$

I would like to re-purpose the script below (borrowed from Find ESXi installation date » VCDX56) and use it as a function and prompt me for a host name when I invoke it. Currently the script will run against all VMs in all connected vCenters. I would like for it to prompt me to run against a specific host. How can I accomplish this?

Function Get-InstallDate {

Get-VMHost | Sort Name | %{

  $thisUUID = (Get-EsxCli -VMHost $_.name).system.uuid.get()

  $decDate = [Convert]::ToInt32($thisUUID.Split("-")[0], 16)

  $installDate = [timezone]::CurrentTimeZone.ToLocalTime(([datetime]'1/1/1970').AddSeconds($decDate))

  [pscustomobject][ordered]@{

    Name="$($_.name)"

    InstallDate=$installDate

  } # end custom object

} # end host loop

}

Any help is appreciated.

Virtual Machine networking

All, I am hoping you can assist me as I have a very strange problem.   I am running two Windows 7 Virtual computers on a Dell e6540.  The one VM is 64 bit the other is a 32 bit OS. They both have 120 GB hard drives with 4 processors. The 64 bit OS has 8 GB of memory the 32 bit OS has 4 GB of memory. Both have a bridged and NAT connection.   Now due to the nature of what these VMs will be asked to do, I have a Netgear Wireless adapter AC1200 and a StarTech Gigabit Ethernet adapter connected to the physical machine but  communicating to the VMs via USB.  The wireless card is connected to the company wireless while the StarTECH USB gigabit adapter is used to connect to welders and other PLCs on the factory floor so the IP address of this unit will get changed.   So what happens is we will change the IP address for the StarTECH usb adapter and connect to the desired device that works fine no issues there, but when you completely disconnect you can still ping that device! Only after disconnecting the Net GEAR wireless adapter are you unable to ping that device (which is set DHCP)  Any ideas?

Horizon View 7 and RSA - C:\Windows\system32\securid (The system cannot find the file specified)

Hi

I try to setup RSA Authenticaton with our Horizon 7 View Connection Server.

(Our old View Infrastruktur (5.1) works great with the rsa authentication manager.)

I setup the Authentication Agent on the RSA Appliance.

Upload the sdconf.rec File in View Administrator.

Now I try to Login. So what I read is, the NodeSecret file should be automatic generated.

But that doesnt work on my System (Windows Server 2012 R2; VMware Connection Server 7.0.1; RSA Authentication Manager 8.0)

So when I look in the the rsa_api_debug.log file, I get this lines:

Hi.

The problem occurred when attempting to start a machine that was supendida. I do not know the causes, but the message is as follows:

Unable to open file "D:\VMWare VM\W7X64LAB\Windows 7 x64-000001.vmdk":

One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot.

The actions taken were as follows:

1. Turn off the virtual machine.

2. Try recupuerar one shapshot

3. check that the file is on the disk.

Can anyone give me some idea to recover the machine?

Thank you

Optimal settings for memory overcommitment?

$

One can find abundant guidance in re configuration settings for maximal VM performance.  What about getting the absolute maximum number of VMs running within a limited quantity of RAM?  Some of the aforementioned performance settings are almost certainly antagonistic toward this goal (eg. disable page sharing).

Other than the memory preference to allow "most" VM memory to be swapped, are there any other tricks for getting a couple of extra VMs fired up?

Updating MAC address during deployment from template

$

Hi all,

I'm using Shawn Masterson's great script

https://blog.smasterson.com/2014/05/21/deploying-multiple-vms-via-powercli-updated-v1-2/

to take a CSV list of VMs and their specs and deploy those VMs using powercli

Works great, but I need to customize it for one more property - MAC address.

We are creating updated VMs to take over the identities of old VMs (right down to their MAC address)

At first I tried the -NetworkAdapterMac <String>, but the VM did not end up with the specified MAC address.

My understanding, this is due to the NetworkAdapterMac parameter meant to specify which MAC you want to operate on, vs actually SETTING the MAC?

So this led me to a MAC set script that works (on its own):

vNugglets: Setting MAC Address for VM NICs using PowerShell

So I attempted to splice the MAC update code into the first script right BEFORE the VM is powered on, passing the Name and Mac:

## the name of the VM whose NIC's MAC address to change

$strTargetVMName = $VM.Name

## the MAC address to use

$strNewMACAddr = $VM.Mac

## get the .NET view object of the VM

$viewTargetVM = Get-View -ViewType VirtualMachine -Property Name,Config.Hardware.Device -Filter @{"Name" = "^${strTargetVMName}$"}

## get the NIC device (further operations assume that this VM has only one NIC)

$deviceNIC = $viewTargetVM.Config.Hardware.Device | Where-Object {$_ -is [VMware.Vim.VirtualEthernetCard]}

## set the MAC address to the specified value

$deviceNIC.MacAddress = $strNewMACAddr

## set the MAC address type to manual

$deviceNIC.addressType = "Manual"

## create the new VMConfigSpec

$specNewVMConfig = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec -Property @{

   ## setup the deviceChange object

   deviceChange = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualDeviceConfigSpec -Property @{

       ## the kind of operation, from the given enumeration

       operation = "edit"

       ## the device to change, with the desired settings

       device = $deviceNIC

   } ## end New-Object

} ## end New-Object

## reconfigure the "clone" VM

$viewTargetVM.ReconfigVM($specNewVMConfig)

But the above code errors out with:

Exception calling "ReconfigVM" with "1" argument(s): "Invalid configuration

for device '0'."

At C:\tmp\deployvms12.ps1:355 char:1

+ $viewTargetVM.ReconfigVM($specNewVMConfig)

+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : VimException

Does this have to do with the NIC's state?  (not connected?)

Feel like I'm close - but if there is an better way to set the MAC before boot, please let me know!

Thanks for any info, tips,

Fletch

Hi,

I am running Workstation 8.

I read the other posts about this problem and I am stumped.

I tried moving my VM onto an external drive but canceled half way through.

When I moved the files back my VM gave m the error.

I tried to merge the snapshots with this command vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -r "Windows XP Professional Ser Pac 3-000009.vmdk" -t 1 "../Windows XP Professional Ser Pac 3.vmdk"

but I get the message "vmware-vdiskmanager.exe is not a recognized file..."

I'm stuck and I need some help.

i am not a programmer I'm just a user.

Thanks,

Adding more than one virtual machine to an existing Vapp

$

Hi

I have created a  Vapp ovf and deployed it to create 4 VMs.

I want to add 2 more VMs to this Vapp using a new ovf (single ovf should deploy 2 machines).

If I create  a new Vapp ovf (containing new VMs),it creates  a new Vapp and doesn't create VMs in existing Vapp.

If I do not include Vapp in my ovf, it deploys one machine only to the existing Vapp.

I do not want to create machines and drag drop them to intended Vapp.

Could somebody please suggest a way to do this?

I am using Venter VCSA 6,ESXI 6.0

vRA forms - Composite Types & Dynamic types

$

Hello,

Hoping someone else is doing crazy things with vRA that might be able to help with this.

I've been trying to find a way to pass a data structure like the below from vRA through to vRO:

An array of:

Name (string or DynamicType)

Size (number)

... where Name is based on a prepopulated selection. For example, Sandwiches - I need 3 Cheese & Tomato Sandwiches, and 15 Ham Sandwiches.

I can do this within vRO by setting the Name as a Dynamic Type - and this works well. However, when this is pulled into vRA the Array is cast into a Map control - but only shows the Size property. Any dynamic types here seem to disappear (presumably because there's isn't a suitable control within the Map - as far as I can tell, there is only a control for String, Number and Date).

When using an array of the Dynamic Type, the control only shows the Name of the dynamic type object.

Ideally what I'm after is something like the control within Storage when requesting a standard Blueprint.

I've had various ideas - e.g. using Name as a combination of Name-Size, but this means creating an item for every possible combination (lots!) and so having a large number of rows for selection. Also using multiple single-dimension arrays populating another - but this relies a on order. Using the sandwich example - adding 3 in the first control, then adding Cheese & Tomato in the second - the combination of which populates the 3rd control.

Hope that makes sense. Any ideas welcome!

Cheers,

Jon

Checking NTP/DNS Report

$

Hey all,

I am looking for a script that would check the NTP services status on vHosts and if possible print out what time the vHost thinks it is.  Then on top of that print out what the vHosts has for the DNS server settings?

So what I am looking for:

NTP Service Status          Time               DNS Server Setting

Let me know if this is possible, thanks!

Backup Solution: From Vcenter - NAS -Other Server (Disaster Recovery).

Hello,

We are trying to implement a backup solution. This is the scenario: We have a server with a ESXI 6.0 and VCenter. There are three hosts running on it (three Virtual Machines on each host). This is the production side.

We have a NAS and another server running ESXI 6.0 in the disaster recovery side.

What we want is first, to backup three critical servers from the production side, to the NAS (wich is, again, in the disaster recovery side) and then restore them to the server located in in the disaster recovery side.

I would appreciate some ideas.

Thank you in advance and my apologies for my english.

Redirect laptop keyboard and mouse to VM?

$

Several years back, I saw a fun post where a guy managed to set up ESXi, install a VM, set up passthrough for his video card and a USB port to the guest, and use the setup like a client hypervisor. From his description, he claimed it actually worked rather well. I have a really beastly laptop, and I've managed to get everything working except for one little detail: the mouse and keyboard. I don't see a way to enable passthrough for those, and I would be stuck using an external USB mouse and keyboard. Now, I know that what I'm suggesting would be completely unsupported, but is there some way to pass these devices through to a guest? There has to be, I would think, especially if the guest VM is a Linux distro. Is there an undocumented way to manually passthrough other devices that aren't listed by ESXi? Is there a way to perhaps tunnel /dev/tty over SSH? Who's feeling creative?

New-SCSIController, issue adding new SCSI when connected to ESX or Vcenter

$

Hi All,

I'm having a bit of an issue figuring out how to add a second scsi controller to a VM. The VM itself has 7 RDM, which I try to connect to second SCSI. The idea is to share these RDM with a second VM later on, but can not yet get to that point. This is all being done within a .ps1 file, however, at one point I was able to get it to work directly on the terminal. Unfortunately I didn't really note down which connection I had. My steps are as follows:

- Log in to ESX server where VM will be created

- Create basic VM with single disk

- Add 7 additional RDM

- Use the following to create new SCSI controller:

   $scsi = New-ScsiController -HardDisk $shared_rdm -BusSharingMode physical -Type VirtualLsiLogic    # Where $shared_rdm is the 7 rdm from above

As soon as it hits this point, I get the following error:

"The operation for the entity "my_vm" failed with the following message: "Access to resource settings on the host is restricted to the server that is managing it: <ip of the vcenter>""

So what that was telling me is that my connection needs to be with the vcenter for this to work, so after adding disks and before creating new scsi, i add the following steps:

Disconnect-VIServer -server *

Connect-VIServer -server <ip_of_vcenter>     # Note I also tried with the FQDN

So now, when running, I get the following error:

"The server connection root@esx_fqdn is required by the current operation. The connection does not exist, possibly because it was actively closed or timed out."

So from what I see, if I am connected to my vcenter, new-scsi complains that it needs to be connected to esx. If I'm connected to the esx, then it wants the vcenter.

My next thought was to connect to both and see what happens, but I get the same issue as when running esx, it complains about being restricted to the vcenter.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

TempDB full... but it's not full

I'm having trouble finding a similar thread, so I assume there's not one.

I have a SQL server and three times a week, I create a snapshot of it. Lately, within a few hours, that snapshot grows to be extraordinarily large, filling up the rest of the provisioned space and freezing the server. I delete the snapshot and the server runs fine again, but that puts me back in square one.

I checked all the drives within the OS and they have tons of free space. I browsed the TempDB datastore and found nothing consuming all the space that VSphere says it's used up. I have no idea what else to check. Suggestions?
