Licensing

Hi All,

Grateful if someone can shed some light on licensing for a stretched cluster. Taking into consideration it would be a 3-node (2 data + witness VM), what would be the licensing requirements for 2 x Servers, both with 2 processors each. Looking at this from the point of view that they have just been unboxed so no vmware software has been installed as yet (with the exception of the witness which would be installed on existing licensed infrastructure).

What licenses would I need ?

I upgraded my Macbook Pro to High Sierra without checking on software compatibility. I cannot run any of my VMs in Fusion 6.x. Fusion loads, but none of the VMs start. Is there a workaround to get things running? Thanks.

I deployed the ova template...

Setup the appliance through the web, Setup the 3rd party pluggins (Veeam, Synology, emc).

Connected both the vCenters and the Realize Operations Manager.

I even added a 2nd username for myself to login.

I went to lunch and when I got back I had a message I was logged out.

When I tried to login I get a Failed error message.

tried on both logins, Rebooted and tried with no luck.

Acceptable Horizon Desktop Logon Time?

$

Hi,

What, in your opinion, is an acceptable logon time for a horizon pool with this config? :

- Windows 10 Enterprise

- Horizon 7.2

- Instant Clone, Floating pool

- User Environment Manager 9.2

- Small Mandatory Profile (~3MB)

- Dedicated UCS + Pure Storage Flash Array hardware

I can't seem to get logon time much below 30secs.  I know the answer to a lot of this is 'it depends’.  Depends on how tolerant the user is, depends on what and how many GPOs are applied, depends on the hardware backing the VDI environment etc.

To me though, 30secs is a bit disappointing.  A user can typically logon to their personal Win10 laptop in less than 5 seconds - I know this is an unfair benchmark to draw comparison, but it’s these kind of comparisons a user will make - users don’t care about the complexities behind delivering non-persistent desktops vs having a pre-built profile sat on a local SSD - one just is ‘faster’ than the other.

For those of you using non persistent View pools, what logon times are you achieving?

Thanks.

VCP6 or VCP6.5

I want to start preparing VCP exam before taking a training class. Should I aim for VCP6 or VCP6.5? It seems like there're a lot material for VCP6, and not much for VCP6.5. Even the training class is VCP6 only.

In my work environment, we have both vCenter6.0 and vCenter6.5. If I aim for VCP6, it seems like I am studying updated knowledge, but it will be easier for me to prepare it.

What's other's thought?

Thank  you,

vCenter Appliance 6.5 - no network

I had to restore the vCenter Appliance 6.5 in my environment but after it restored successfully and booted up just fine I had no networking so I couldn't ping the IP/hostname or browse to the web client.

When I tried to make hardware changes to the VM I get this error:

I'm using distributed switches for everything and have no standard switches.

After plenty of Googling a few web sites said I should change the MAC address in:

/etc/udev/rules.d/ 70-persistent-net.rules

The problem is I don't have this file to edit as it isn't present in this directory.

How can I get the networking working again in the vCenter Appliance? I've tried restoring a couple of times, even to a different host but it hasn't helped.

Does anyone backup writable vols?

If so how are you doing it ? Does it require the users to log off and have the writable disconnected?

have you had to restore the writable ?

Newly added hard disk through VCenter webclient on a VM not showing on the guest OS (Linux)

Hi,

I added a 16TB disk through VCenter Web client on a VM (ubuntu) hosted by a ESXi 6.0 host, but the disk is not showing up on the guest OS disks list. This disk is using the netapp NFS for data storage. I can SSH into the Host and the VM, dont know how to view the vmdk file on that VM. basically just need the UUID of the newly added Disk on the VM, do we need to reboot the OS or the VM for the newly added hard disk to show-up in the list of disk?

Please advise.

Thanks

Hi All

Might be a silly question so apologies.

Just upgrade to Fusion 10 Pro on my High Sierra and notice that the VM Title is missing from the window bar on each machine.

Thanks for any guidance ...

Is it possible to mount a VM that is running in VMWare ESXi in VMWare Workstation?

I have a customer with a significant problem. The linux server they are running is fine, but an application is not running correctly. They want to ship me their image (which is currently running in ESXi 5.0.0, 469512.  Is it possible for me to mount what they send to me in VMWare Workstation?  Do I need a particular version to match the version of ESXi?

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

Limiting the number of concurrent storage vMotions with vCenter 6.0

$

I have about 100 VMs to migrate to another datastore, but would like to minimise performance impact while doing so by limiting the number of concurrent Storage vMotions to only one, so that I can queue them all up and have them go one at a time.  (default limit is 8).

I found the below guides about how to achieve this, but was written and tested only with ESXi 4,  5 and 5.1 :

Limiting the number of Storage vMotions - frankdenneman.nl

Limiting the number of concurrent vMotions - frankdenneman.nl

vSphere 6 documentation seems to mirror what's Frank's last post:

vSphere 6.0 Documentation Center

So I tried adding in config key to my vCenter 6 and ESXi 6 environment like so:

  <vpxd>

    <ResourceManager>

      <maxCostPerEsx41Ds>20</maxCostPerEsx41Ds>

    </ResourceManager>

Then restarted vCenter virtual appliance, but was still able to Storage vMotion 3x VMs simultaneously to the same datastore...

I assume key has changed in version 6?  Any ideas?

Fusion 10.0.1 + VMWare Tools - macOS 10.12.6 resolution changes to HiDPI variant when logging in

$

I have a fresh install of macOS 10.12.6 in VMWare Fusion 10.0.1, the VM has the latest VMWare Tools installed in the guest OS. I've set the resolution of the VM to 1920x1080 by dragging the window size to that particular resolution.

When I log in, the guest OS kicks back down to a 960x540 HiDPI resolution. Adjusting the resolution in System Preferences works until the next log out & log in cycle, where it resets the resolution of the VM back to the 960x540 HiDPI resolution.

This issue also occurs when the Default for display option is selected in the Display preference pane.

Monitor is a 27" 2560x1440 display.

VM Settings has Use full resolution for Retina Display disabled.

Attached is a video of the issue.

*EDIT* - I should note, this issue does not occur in my 10.13 VM.

Anyone else experienced this? What fix (if any) has been applied to resolve this annoying behaviour?

SRM with Platform Services Controller High Availability (PSC HA)

$

Hi,

I am looking to understand if SRM 6.5.x supports Platform Services Controller High Availability (PSC HA)? (VMware Knowledge Base)

I am deploying vCenter Server High Availability (VCHA) clusters with PSC HA using F5 LTM Load Balancers, but I am not 100% sure if SRM supports it?

I have attached a block diagram of my proposed final setup. There will be two VCHA clusters and two PSC's per SSO site, with 2 sites in the SSO domain. All vCenter Servers will be federated using Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM). Only 1 VCHA cluster in each SSO site will be using SRM to protect/recover it's workloads.

All vCenters & PSC's will be running version 6.5 update 1.

The PSC's will been deployed in sequence 1->2->3->4 and a final manual PSC replication agreement will be created between PSC 4 and PSC 1, to create a ring topology.

If I cannot use PSC HA with SRM:

  1. can I still use it for the workload VCHA cluster?
  2. which PSC's should I directly configure SRM to use?

Any advice or gotchas you can point out will be appreciated.

Cheers,

M

Workflows to return user login

Hi,

I help to create workflows to return user account to open ticket the BMX Remedy through do vRealize Orchestrator.

My scenario is as follows

The user informs his Active Directory domain login and vRO validates this user returns the Remedy access login corresponding to the user of the Active Directory domain.

But I do not know how I can create some kind of javascript code, which performs the user comparison and returns your remedy login.

Anyone would have any idea how I can perform this setup.

Odd Network Issues Since Migrating Environment From vSphere 6U3 > 6.5U1

$

Hello all -

Need your assistance if you can spare a few - have been having definitive network issues in 6.5 U1. Seems to be vDS related. Haven't noticed issues when Host/VMs run on vSS. What issues? VMs occasionally not ping'ing. Cisco Voice servers not getting NTP info from 'cluster' member VM (2 VMs per Cluster for those familiar with Cisco - pub/sub servers). Domain Controller VMs having occasional communication issues (this one I'm not convinced on but my Director seems to think there's an issue here). When VMs run on vSS...issues seem to have dissipated. Weird for sure.

Also, when I was beginning the migration from 6U3 > 6.5U1, and disconnected Hosts from old (6.0U3) VCSA & connecting them to new (6.5U1) VCSA, our "services" (web UI's, DC connectivity, etc.) went down even though VM guest OS & OS (Windows) services didn't go down. We had to reboot all VMs. Never had this happen when just connecting Hosts with running VMs to a new vCenter. Has anyone else ever had this happen? And none of this, Host Connection issue or the vDS issue I described earlier has ever happened before. Anyone else seeing "odd" network issues with 6.5U1?...and seemingly mainly when running on vDS? I've been Googling for quite a while and haven't seen anything out there (yet). My org doesn't have VMware Support unfortunately, so I can't pursue this from a VMW Support perspective, sadly. :/

Thanks in advance.

ESXi 6.5u1 netdump failing

$

So am currently rolling out new VCSAs (6.5u1) and new clusters running ESXi 6.5u1.  Historically we have used autodeploy so netdump has been a must to retain info from a PSOD.  Although we are now using SD Cards the centralised source for dump info provided by netdump is too good to lose.

The issue I am hitting is that netdump starts but immediately fails with a :

(via NMI in the iDRAC)

Starting network coredump from IP-HOST to IP-VCSA

Cannot continue NetDump from DF/NMI/MCE stack

(via vsish -e set /reliability/crashMe/Panic 1)

Starting network coredump from IP-HOST to IP-VCSA

Netdump: FAILED: Couldn't attach to dump server at IP-HOST IP-VCSA.

Stopping Netdump.

It then proceeds to coredump instead.

I have made sure the netdumper service is started (and set to auto), /storage/netdump partition increased from 1GB to 10GB, file size limit changed in /etc/sysconfig/netdumper and ESXi host is configured to use the vCenter and the correct VMK (in our case vmk2).  I can test connectivity from the ESXi hosts' SSH and that passes, as well as being able to send UDP on 6500 to the target (nc -z -w 1 -s VMkernelIPAddress -u DumpCollectorIPAddress DumpCollectorPortNumber). I have even unloaded the firewall on the ESXi host and get the same result.  Baffled and not sure where to go from here.  /var/log/vmware/netdumper/netdumper.log also contains no information (except confirmation that the check command has compelted).

EDIT:  Ok, so looking at the netdumper.log I can see the following entry when netdumper is started;

2017-11-23T22:49:12.060Z| netdumper| I125: Configured size limits: 5 GB per file, 10 GB per host, 20 GB for all

Looking at a coredump on a host these are some 7.4GB.  Is the issue the fact that the single file is greater than 5GB?  If so anyone know where this parameter is configured?
