How to safely increase disk space

$

Hello,

I have vmware workstation on my windows 7 desktop (is this referred to guest?). I have a small Cloudera cluster with three nodes (are they referred to hosts?)

The current space allocated to the three hosts are not enough now and I need a safeway to increase their size from 40G, 20G, 20G to at least 20GB more on each of them.

Please note the cluster has been installed on them and up and running already, I want to be very careful to each step I must take in order to this change.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone did this before and can share your experience.

Thank you in advance.

Can not create datastore with discovered iSCSI target.

hello,

I am trying to test vsphere with iSCSI.

I deployed a iSCSI target service on CentOS 7 with test steps:

1. disable firewalld, disable Selinux

2. yum -y install targetcli, and start up target service

3. configure iSCSI target

     a. create block storage:

         QQ20171129-111620@2x.png

     b. create iqn:

          QQ20171129-111832@2x.png

     c. create LUN mapping to the block storage:

          QQ20171129-112051@2x.png

    d. I did not create ACL on iSCSI target, I just want to everyone have access to this iSCSI. I do not know if it correct or not to not configure ACL on iSCSI, hope someone could give me some hint here.

4. I check the iSCSI server port 3260 is listennning.

After I deploy an iSCSI server as above. I go to configure vsphere vcenter.

I did these steps:

1.  I created a new virtual standard switch vSwitch 1 with vmkernel, and uplink vmnic 5.

     QQ20171129-113129@2x.png

2. I start a software iSCSI storage adapter

     QQ20171129-113249@2x.png

4. I bind the vmnic 5 with iSCSI storage adapter vmhba64

     QQ20171129-113726@2x.png

5. I use dynamic discover the iSCSI target,

     QQ20171129-113908@2x.png

6. Then the vsphere find this

     QQ20171129-114015@2x.png

           QQ20171129-114221@2x.pngQQ20171129-114208@2x.pngQQ20171129-114153@2x.png

as you can see there, the devices tab, path tab, there is nothing there, I do not know if it is normal (but I created a LUN 0 on iSCSI target server before.)

I have a question about the iSCSI name, is this iSCSI  name (on vsphere) should be the same name as iqn which I create on iSCSI target server ?

7. Finally I try to create a datastore with the iSCSI, I can not find the iSCSI corresponding disk device on vsphere

     QQ20171129-115044@2x.png

        QQ20171129-115210@2x.png

questions:

1.  On iSCSI server I did not configure ACL, I hope everyone can connected to the iSCSI server, does it affect something or leading some error?

2.  Should the iSCSI Name on vsphere be the same as the iqn of iSCSI target server that I configured.

3.  The vsphere find the iSCSI target server, but Why I can not find the corresponding disk devices LUN 0 on iSCSI target server?

I really need someone's helps, a million thanks to all of you.

Best regards

shengping

I am trying to test autodeploy feature in recently upgraded test environment (vCSA 6.5 U1).  I am getting following error while booting a blank VM  (OS type selected : other 64-bit, Network adapter: tried both E1000/VMXNET3, local HDD).  IP from DHCP is successfully assigned but something wrong with autodeploy. I am using solarwind TFTP and placed :

"

tftp: IP address/tramp....ok

could not start download: Invalid argument (http://ipxe.org/1c25e002)

could not boot image: Invalid argument (http://ipxe.org/1c25e002)

Network error encountered while PXE booting

"

Note: I downloaded TFTP image from vCSA console, ESXi zipped folder from VMware .  I have done no special configuration in host profile.

I will really appreciate any suggestion to resolve...

Anybody else have this problem?

How to use vCLI to add/define "Virtual Serial Port" on Linux?

Hi,

Is there any vSphere CLI command avaiable in ESX 6.5 to add/define "Virtual Serial Port" to a VM?

assume targeting to the host directly without going through vCenter or vMA.

Someone has suggested using PowerCLI, but wondering if vCLI could acheive too.

Hi We are in a process of implementing Office 216 + Appstacks (2.12.1) , Installing the core office application in one appstack and project and visio on other appstack

when user logs in and lauches the projectc or visio , the office start the " Office configuration windows" Post that application work fine.

  • Would like to know is core office is suggest to put in the base (master Image)?
  • I have followed the ( Installing and using Microsoft Office Products with VMware App Volumes 2.x (2146035) | VMware KB ) to capture the Appstack.
  • Capture process is completed successfully with out any error and KMS Activation happens with out any issue.
  • We have notices some times when user logs in we see a "svoffice" pop up window.
  • We have notices if use only office appstack 2016 without visio or project works fine , with out  any error.
  • Users Starts to see the configuration windows as soon as visio and project appstacks are atached.

Does any one faced this issue and is there any solution for this. (We are uding the office 2016 Pro Plus ) and not office 365 2016.

Dropping packets when pinging host (RedHat 7.2) from guest (RedHat 6.2 or Windows 10 VM)

Dropping packets when pinging host (RedHat 7.2) from guest (RedHat 6.2 or Windows 10 VM)

Using VMware Workstation Pro 12.5.7

I've tried two different configurations and receive the same results:

1) Host OS: Red Hat 7.2, Guest OS: Red Hat 6.2

2) Host OS: Red Hat 7.2, Guest OS: Windows 10

In both cases when I ping the Host from the Guest I'm losing an average of 26% of the pings as "Request Timed Out"

In both cases the Guest can ping other machines with no loss and pings *from* the Host to the Guest have no loss.

There are multiple Ethernet adapters on the Host machine each on different subnets (2.2.2.x, 131.1.1.x, etc) and the Guest needs to use 2 in one configuration and 3 different subnets in the other one.

I've set up a custom Bridged vmnets for each network adapter on the host, linking each one to a specific Ethernet adapter.

For instance, if the Host's eth0 is 2.2.2.2 and the Guest is configured as 2.2.2.4 then I created vmnet0 and bridged it to eth0.

When pinging 2.2.2.2 (Host adapter) from with the Guest OS I'm getting the packet losses.

Any thoughts?

App Volumes 2.13.1 - The connection to the remote computer has ended

Since updating our App Volumes Manager and Agent from v2.12.1 to v2.13.1 we are seeing around 1 in 3 logons to our non persistent linked clone pools fail with the error The connection to the remote computer has ended. We seem to see this error quite quickly, only a few seconds after clicking on the pool in the Client. Removing the v2.13.1 agent and going back to using v2.12.1 immediately resolves the issue.

I've read the article here https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2151948that seems to suggest this error can occur in large scale deployments of AppVols but our current use is very small (10 users or so). This article also says the symptoms occur after being logged into a VM for a few minutes then being kicked off which doesn't match our scenario either. They also suggest using a writable volume script as a fix but we don't use writable volumes..

I've trawled the Clients logs for further clues but there's very little to indicate the root cause. Everything seems to be going well in the logs until it displays the error message with no underlying reason given.

Has anyone else had any experience of connection errors since upgrading their AppVols?

How to apply a policies and symptom definition changes

$

Hi - first time poster here, relatively new to vROps.  Version is 6.6.1 build 6163035

I want to apply some alert symptom definition changes in my environment, and despite making changes to the policy, with each collection, I am still seeing alerts based on the old symptom definitions.  Here is what I have done to try and achieve this:

  • Inspected Administration > Polices > Active Policies, and noted the current active policy (there was only one active policy, with priority D)
  • Selected the current active policy in Administration > Polices > Policy Library and clicked 'Add New Policy'
  • Gave the policy a name, and description
  • Browsed to Alert/Symptom Definitions and filtered for the symptom definitions that interest me
    • set each symptom definition to be changed to State=Local, Condition=Override with a new threshold
  • Saved my changes

Now, I might have thought that any child customizations to the Default/Current active policy would be applied take precedence, but, subsequent collections still result in alerts based on the original symptom definition thresholds.  I've gone so far as to set my new policy as Default, making it the lone active policy, as it should have inherited all settings from the original active policy which was the default - but alerts continue to reflect the original symptom definition thresholds.

Is it clear what I am missing, here?  I've been surfing videos for this topic on youtube for hours trying to clarify, but, no luck so far.  Let me know if I can provide more details... thanks.

best practice for antivirus ?

$

Hello!

Hoping for some opinions on this!  Currently in our environment we use vShield , SVA appliances to help with some resource management with antivirus.  For the sake of not going one way or another I won't say what antivirus we use.  The question I have is if we upgrade we will lose the option to use vShield, SVA to help manage resources.  The company we use said that we don't need to use that with the new version.  What are some recommendations for antivirus ? What are people doing?   vShield seems to be working great for us and a little nervous to upgrade and lose that.   And as always every vendor, company have different opinions on this .. lol

Thanks for any help or opinions on this .

VM/Host Groups & Rules --> can I automate the placement of new VM's in my VM Group

$

Hi,

For vSAN stretched cluster to work properly, you are required to configure VM-Host affinity rules:

Chapter 9 explains this:

https://storagehub.vmware.com/export_to_pdf/vsan-stretched-cluster-2-node-guide

example:

Host Groups (2 groups - adding hosts at each "data" site in its respective fault domain in each group)

and

VM Groups (adding in all VM’s you want to reside in Which Group/site) so that the VM’s you want to stay at one site stay on those hosts

I am looking for a way to automatically place new Virtual Machines that get created in a specific group.

We are using Instant Clone functionality with Horizon View, therefore we will have different VM's created randomly at different times.  I do not want to have to go into the VM Group manually and add all of my new Virtual Machines to the VM Group everyday.

We have a primary site that we will want all of our VDI VM's runninng on and the secondary site for a failover scenario.  We want to keep the VM's at the *preferred* site and have them automatically get placed in the VM Group.

I have seen people using Powercli scripts for this, but that is not optimal.

Failed to connect to Connection Server

Why is it that when I try to access the connection server via IP, it says :failed to connect to connection server"but if FQDN of the server will be used; it connects fine.

Then another setup on another VLAN is observed and IP HTML access is successful.

And why does if connecting to admin window via IP address, a white box appears but is not encountered if FQDN is used.

Thanks!

How to downgrade vSphere ESXi 6.0 license keys

I'm trying to downgrade vSphere ESXi 6.0 license keys to VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

I see the following:

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2006975

How to downgrade license keys in My VMware (2006975)

However,  I don't see Manage License Keys from the navigation bar.

It's difficult to navigate around myVMware. I did find:

Manage License Keys– View and manage license keys by product or folder.

But it's a dead link.

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/my-licenses

How can I easily downgrade my vSphere 6 license to vSpere 5.5?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
