Fusion 10.0.1 & Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

$

I installed the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update on a VM running under Fusion 10.0.1 and High Sierra 10.13 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB. Since then I've experienced two problems:

1) When attempting to save files from MS Word 2016 for Windows to folder shared between the Windows VM and the Mac (such as the Mac desktop), I get the following error message: "There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost." I've attached a screenshot. This error is new since the Fall Creators Update. The file appears to save despite the error message. I have no problem copying files natively between Mac and Windows from the Windows File Explorer.

2) The second issue I'm having since the Fall Creators Update is that switching between windowed and full screen mode causes terribly unusable graphic distortion of the Windows' display upon returning from full screen to windowed mode. Graphics work fine in full screen mode. If I start the VM in windowed mode and keep it there, the graphics are fine. But, any change between the two leaves windowed mode FUBAR until I restart the guest operating system.

I have tried reinstalling VMware tools in the hope that it would solve both problems. It did not fix either.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Problems with Windows Fall Creators update

I am running VMware Fusion Pro 10.0.1 on a Macbook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015).  I recently upgraded Fusion to 10.0.1 specifically to get support for the Windows Fall Creators update, version 1709.

My guest VM was working perfectly at version 1703.  After doing a normal Windows feature update, the VM started behaving disastrously, with signs of Windows Explorer crashing. It was so bad that I immediately reverted to a snapshot, which was fine.

Having got my VM functioning again, I made a linked clone and tried the update again on the clone. Curiously, the result was not quite as bad the second time, but still unusable - in particular the "Start" menu does not appear. Since this is a "throw away" clone, I tried a number of the "fixes" suggested by Google search, but none made any difference.

In desperation I then tried the "Reset Windows" option (i.e. the one that reinstalls a fresh Windows system, deleting all of the applications but preserving personal files). Even this did not work - the Start menu still does not appear.  Every time I click on the start button the following event appears in the event log:

Again there is a fair amount of lore about dealing with this error, and I've tried most of the "fixes" to no avail.  The Start menu still does not appear even if I start the system in "safe mode", though curiously, in this case I don't see anything in the event log.  There is some advice to try making a new account in case it is a corrupt profile, but unfortunately the "Settings" tool also crashes if I try. (Other advice is that this is a waste of time anyway).

I haven't had this trouble on any of the real machines that I've upgraded from 1703 to 1709. I don't think I'm doing anything particularly unusual on this VM; it just runs a few tools for me that aren't available natively on MacOS.

Any ideas?  For the time being I have deferred the upgrade on the main VM, but I assume that I will have to move forward eventually (in any case, I want to).  Obviously I can clone it again to do further experiments, but I'm not sure what to try next.  Any ideas?

ESXi 6.5.0 hangs during uploads of ISO to Datastore

Brand new R330

PERC H730

5 X Disk SAS 931GB RAID 5 (Datastore1)

32GB USB Internal (ESXi)

32GB RAM

Very Typical small business setup.

Fresh ESXi 6.5.0 installed yesterday to internal USB drive, setup portal, login to portal locally using Edge, Chome, FF, IE, tried them all, edge works best. Added vm's, added new Datastore1-full partition, created new ISO folder in Datastore1, upload button, browse, choose Windows Server 2012R2 STD.ISO,  the upload gets to about 78% then hangs forever. Cannot ever finish any ISO, tried other ISO, and they all hang after a certain point.

Any ideas?

Tried different folders, sub folders, they all do the same thing. Smaller files work fine, I think it only happens when the files are larger than 4GB.

I added a screenshot, showing that vsphere is still "running" in the background at 79%, but the window opened thinks the upload finished and is only 4GB. This ISO is 5.6GB.

NSX Controller Failed to Deploy "waiting for controller ready"

First time using the community so please let me know if I'm breaking any rules.

I have a lab running at home and I'm trying to deploy NSX so I can study with hands on experience. I'm struggling with deploying an NSX controller. I keep getting this error "waiting for NSX controller ready controller-14 failed in deployment- Timeout on waiting for controller ready" I know this is basically saying hey I never heard back from this guy so I'm canceling this deployment but I can't figure out why its failing. I know why it never hears back from the controller and that's because I can never ping it from any device. (NSX-Manager, ESXi host its on, and the SVI on the switch) I have a vDS with one port group on vlan 23 (SVI on a 3560 as the D.G.) where all my other VMs are and they work fine. I deployed a Win-7 VM in this Port group to make sure its not that and the VM worked perfectly with no networking problems. I have triple checked the IP pools and they have the correct subnet, DG, Domain, DNS, and IP info. The Controller is being deployed on the same network as the manager so there's no routing going on between the manger and controller. I have looked on Google and none of the solutions have helped me solve this. I searched on the forums here and didn't find anything. After checking the pools I made sure the port the controller is connected to is on vlan 23 and shows as up(green) but nothing can talk to it. I have tried deploying it on different hosts with no success. I have the host part setup but I cant get a controller to deploy. Also I can never login to the controller after its deployed if that helps at all. If anyone can throw some suggestions my way I would appreciate it.

Side notes,

NTP is setup and working with synced times, DNS is good to go, Everything can talk to each other besides the controller being deployed.

Thanks for looking,

K.

Workstation 12 smart card reader not detected

I am running Workstation Player 12.5 on a Windows 7 system.

When I start my Windows 7 VM, the list of devices in the frame show the keyboard card reader with a card in it and the card reader on the laptop itself.

However, the OS in the VM doesn't see the card readers at all. I get no other error messages, and I could find nothing in the log to shed any light on this.

This VM is a clone of one that works or worked fine on at least two other host machines. That leads me to suspect some sort of local policy issues, but I'm no expert on that, either.

Can anyone point me in useful directions?

yours,

Michael

Hello everyone!

I have some hosts with the red exclamation, (one yellow), but there are no alarms to view for this. Everything is working great. How do I clear these icons? It's just annoying is all.

Cheers!

OpenGL 3.3 extended / LGLS faulty or does it come in a future version?

$

Recently I had to deal with some customers they upgraded a 3D viewer we produce - and it stops working in player 12 after the upgrade.

The former version used OpenGL 3.0 - so they just enabled the "3D acceleration" option in the VM setting.

After reading the debugview output of that new version it seems that OpenGL 3.3 is missing some stuff - to be precise something called "vertex shader".

Our 3D app makes use of these - now nearly two years are  gone and I checked the software in Player 14 again - and OpenGL 3.3 is still not fully supported.

When Player 12 came out there was a clear "no". And a "maybe" for a future versioin..

So now the future version is on the market and still no OpenGL 3.3 extended / LGSG

Does anybody know when this is coming?  Or will the player not be able to do more than OpenGL 3.3 lite ?

Or which products DO support it for certain?

I heard from some people in a customer's lab they have a Grid K2 in Citrix Xenserver up and running, and our software shows up with 3D output via Xendesktop.

And I know that OpenGL of any kind is also available in ESX via GPU passthrough (at least the dedicated passthrough).

So is that the way?

And if it does - what licenses and viewers are required to do that?

vCenter HA mode and NSX manager

$

We are doing a greenfield NSX deployment at a site. We are following the VVD so we have a 4-node management cluster with 2 vCenters, a Computer vCenter and a Management vCenter. We would like to put both of the vCenters in HA mode. Will the NSX manager or any other appliances that register with vCenter have any issues during failover? I have not seen that to be the case. We also using Ephemeral VDS ports for the vCenter nics just in case we have issues and need to do some things with the ESXi host.

However, in the VMware validated design, vCenter HA is not mentioned. So that got me thinking. Thank you very much.

hi guys

I use Storage DRS and I don't know why (I don't kow why I have not asked before)

the automation level keeps changing I have vCenter 6.0 and 3 vCenters and all of them do the same thing

- automation level changes from Default (Fully automated) to Disabled or Manual. Disabled 99% of the time.

- also I always use Keep VMDKs Together not checked and some VMs automatically checked

see screens this is how I found a Storage Cluster today, we receive alerts that datastores are getting full and the blade is the Storage DRS doing the stuff I just said

Unified Access Gateway 3.0 stops responding after a few weeks?

$

I have a freshly built Horizon 7.2 environment running the non-FIPS Unified Access Gateway 3.0.  This morning, users were unable to connect externally.  I validated that direct connections to the View Connection Server functioned, and I logged into the admin interface on the UAG to ensure all of the Horizon services were up and in the "Green" status.  Everything looked good.  However, users were getting connection timed out when they tried connecting to the UAG.  Rebooting the UAG resolved the issue.  I have found another user mention this issue with 3.0 in the commends on Carl Stalhood's blog.  Has anyone else run into this issue with 3.0?

Fusion 10 breaks bluetooth on macbook

If I close Fusion (after I've been using Windows XP VM for example), sometimes I lose bluetooth. It is lost entirely... bluetooth icon at the right side of my macbook's menu bar says "Bluetooth not available". It will not come back until I restart macos. This is Fusion Pro 10.0.1 on High Sierra supplemental update. It's a real nuissance because I use my macbook in clamshell mode with bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Can't use them without bluetooth.

Should vRA Reprovision and Destroy actions also trigger software component actions?

$

I have a blueprint with that includes a software component. The initial provisioning and software component actions (install and configure) fire as expected when first deployed.

When selecting reprovision, the vm deploys without issue but the software component actions (install and configure) never fire.

Similarly, when selecting Destroy, the uninstall action also fails to fire but the VM is powered off and deleted.

Is this the expected behavior or need I configure something else to trigger the software component actions?

TIA!

Show UEM logon and logoff progress information with NoAD mode?

$

Good morning,

I'm looking to leverage the "Show VMware UEM logon and logoff progress information" GPO, without leveraging a GPO I was hoping it to be an option I could add to the NoAD file, but I haven't found anything for it yet. I'm not extremely hopeful, since in the description of the GPO, it says "When this setting is enabled, a splash screen with a progress bar is shown when FlexEngine is called from a script."

You can configure Show VMware UEM logon and logoff progress information to show a splash screen with progress bar when FlexEngine runs.

Procedure

  1. In the Group Policy Management Editor, double-click Show VMware UEM logon and logoff progress information.
  2. Select Enabled.

Thanks,

Mike

     Hello all!

     I have a question about how to compile a nic driver source of linux to a vib file of ESXi.

     I found some documents ,like GitHub - gomesjj/r8152 at 4b9bb02444e05fe63743bcc588b47268b4996d1f  and  https://www.v-front.de/2013/03/how-to-build-device-drivers-for-esxi-5x.html

After I made the build Environment and compile the source code,lots of errors have taken place.

     I cannot open the documents listed in  https://www.v-front.de/2013/03/how-to-build-device-drivers-for-esxi-5x.html .

     If someone has the experience about this,can you give me some advises or docements ?

     A great thanks!!!

How to disable ESX 6.5 virtual serial port telnet server to echo FF FD 25?

$

After enable Virtual Serial Port over network using telnet protocol on ESX 6.5,

when using Python telnetlib library to do telnet connection,

ESX telnet server would echo back '\xff\xfd%' after the first write.

After digging into RFC 854 - Telnet Protocol Specification ,

'\xff\xfd%' is IAC DO command.

Is there any easy way I can config Virtual Serial Port telnet server from ESX server to disable the echo?

Here's a sample Python script to try:

import time
import telnetlib

HOST = "172.18.125.43"
PORT = "7004"

tn = telnetlib.Telnet(HOST, PORT)
tn.set_debuglevel(10)

for i in range(5):
    tn.write("\n")    time.sleep(1)    tn.read_very_eager()

tn.close()

Example output:

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): send '\n'

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): recv '\xff\xfd%\r\n\r\nLogin: '

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): IAC DO 37

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): send '\n'

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): recv '%\r\nPassword: '

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): send '\n'

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): recv '\r\n'

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): send '\n'

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): recv '\r\n'

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): send '\n'

Telnet(172.18.125.43,7004): recv '\r\n'

HP NC522SFP+ Dual PORT 10GBE card link down

Hi all!

I have connected our nas QNAP TS-831XU-RP and a PowerEdge T410 using an HP NC522SFP+ Dual PORT 10GBE card.

In particular i have installed esxi 5.5u3 (dell cutomized + added manually hp vib) on the T410 and then i created locally a windows 2008 server vm , traffic is good for a few minutes, then host lost connection from QNAP, so i lost connection from my NFS datastore.

vsphere client show link down for HP NC522SFP+ card

I have checked HP card with another test: using another pyisical windows sbs 2008 host, communication with the nas is fine and fast.

What's wrong with my esxi? What can i check and test again?

Adding Horizon Hostname

We have created a dev environment using VIO 3.1 and NSX 6.3.1 and all works well however due to the fact the during deployment we did not assign a VIP hostname so horizon is only accessible via the public IP and not any hostname as none was assigned.

How do we assign a hostname so that horizon can be accessed via public hostname and what needs to be done to use SSL both in horizon and noVNC ? There are multiple apache2 configu file and we are not sure what to change.

Change Vcenter/vsphere IP address display in browser from unsecure to secure

Hi Experts,

First of all I apologize for not putting the correct heading for the topic.

I am running vcenter and and esxi hosts, but whenever I access it using IP address, I get the "not secure" warning on browser.

I know this has to do with certification but have no idea how to proceed. Any links/insights would be much appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,
