Datastore gone missing / Extents Missing

Hello,

I have a datastore called "Secondary", this datastore was apparently extended over two different drives. Another person thought it would be a good idea to swap out the Raid Controller. They did that and then reconnected the old raid controller when nothing worked.

Anyway. Here we are. We have Disk Internals VMFS Recovery software but it seems to crash at 1TB transferred. Is there a way to rebuild the datastore without losing data and having ESXI see the datastore as it did before? Some information follows.

Intermitent network disconnect in VM using E1000E NIC

$

Hi,

We just installed three new Windows Server 2012 and one new Windows 8 VMs on ESXi 5.1. On those VMs, we get a lot of errors in the System Event log about network disconnects. According to the logs, the network disconnects for about one second as we get another event saying that a network connection was established at 1 Gbps just after. Just on the day of January 28, this problem occured 85 times on a single server VM.

Those VMs are using the recommended E1000E NIC with vmx-09 hardware version. The Tools are installed and are current. All VMs are connected to the same vSwitch which has a dedicated physical port to the gigabit network switch (no NIC teaming and no VLAN tagging). The VMs are running from the same datastore that uses local disks setup in RAID 10 with a hardware RAID controller (LSI 2108 chipset).

Of course, when the alledged disconnect occurs, Windows shuts down momentarily network bound services (such as NetBIOS Helper service) and brings it back right away when the reconnection occurs. This annoying problem also causes interruptions in file transfers on network shares, so it is not just a harmless error that can be ignored.

Here is an example of the disconnect event:

Log Name:      System
Source:        e1iexpress
Date:          2013-01-29 10:53:13
Event ID:      27
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      --- censored by me! ---
Description:
Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection
Network link is disconnected.

Here is the reconnection 1 second later:

Log Name:      System
Source:        e1iexpress
Date:          2013-01-29 10:53:14
Event ID:      32
Task Category: None
Level:         Information
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      --- censored by me! ---
Description:
Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection
Network link has been established at 1Gbps full duplex.

Here are some interesting facts about this problem:

  • We checked the physical link to the host and everything is fine. We don't have any disconnection reported by the host or the switch.
  • The problem occurs in all VM which have E1000E NIC, but not at the same time.
  • Changing the VM NIC type to E1000 solves the problem: no more network disconnection reported by the VM and file transfers are not interrupted anymore.
  • The disconnects are not evenly spaced in time. It may occur many times in the same minute and then nothing for more than an hour.

Has anyone had this kind of problem before? Any clue about what may be the cause?

We can still use the workaround we found and change the NICs to E1000 but it is not the one recommended for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

Thanks for your help!

Installation of Proofing Tools of Office 365

Hi,

We have an Office 365 appstack which is working fine. But Proofing tools (Spelling and Grammer) are missing for the Office 365 appstack, may I know how to create an appstack with the proofing tools installed or can I install the Proofing tools separately on an Office 365 deployed VDI.

Thanks

Problems with installing Win32 apps from workspaceONE details view

Hello community, We have a very curios issue. We are managing Windows 10 devices and have also an on-prem vIDM in place for unified app catalog. So installing of apps is working fine so far from workspace ONE app, but if a user is searching for an app and click on it, he is forwared to the app details page. If the user tries to install the app then, nothing happens. This behavior is only if the users tries to install an app from the details view after searching for it. I do not think it is an server issue and we were not able to identify any network issues, on iOS it is also working without problems. So I wanted to ask if maybe somebody have already the same issue? WS1 version 19.7.0.7 and vIDM 19.0.3 Thanks and BR Michael

Vcenter vm-s with duplicate names

Hello!

I'm new here and this is my first post. If i violate any forum rules please forgive me this time.

I don't know if this is a bug or a feature, but i hoped i'd save some headache for people that i had, thinking my vcenter database is corrupted or something else is seriously flawed with my vcenter deployment (6.7 u3). At some point i discovered few virtual machines in my environment that had exactly the same name. Every article i found online described this situation as a flaw so that was my understanding as well.

In any case if you have similar problem then check the "Discovered virtual machine" folder - if you have a virtual machine in there, then the vcenter does not seem to care when you start creating a new one with same name. Simple as that. Is it a bug or a feature - i don't know, but hopefully someone with more experience and knowledge can explain this.

windows 10 1809 slow

I downloaded the Windows 10 1809 and Server 2019 ISOs the day they became available so I can start working on my templates.

I built the templates with EFI, paravirtual for the C drive and vmxnet3 adapter. I've been using this combo for other versions of windows 10/8/7and windows server 2008r2/2012r2/1016 without issue.

So far Windows 2019 (with desktop experience) seems to be ok at least for a basic vm and guest customization. Haven't tried anything else yet.

Windows 10 1809 on the other hand is very, very slow to reboot after the initial install or even just rebooting after making some changes post install. After installing the OS it took 10-15 minutes for the initial windows setup stuff (user, security settings, etc) to appear . I tried a VM set to BIOS and it seemed faster but was still quite slow. Server 2019 and other versions of windows 10 have no issue.

The hosts are esxi 6.5 and 6.7.

I haven't had a chance to try every combo of BIOS/EFI/vmxnet3/e1000e/paravirtual/lsi sas to see if one is the cause of the issue but was wondering if anyone else had noticed any issues or if it was just me?

Thanks

Network Permissions Do Not Propagate

$

Hello!

I am trying to set up an environment for my students using the ESXi and VCSA 6.7 from VMAP. I have everything done, except for the networking. I have set up a Distributed Switch and individual Distributed Port Groups for each class. I have created a role with that allows students to assign networks, but when I create a new permission, assign the role to the Distributed Switch, and check the box for Propagate to children, it doesn't propagate. The newly assigned permissions show up on the switch, but not on any of the associated port groups.

Permissions propagate for folders, resource pools, and datastores, so I feel like I am missing something because it isn't working for networks. Is that working as intended or is it a bug? Has anyone come across this and have a solution?

ubuntu host, win10 guest: bluetooth microphone does not work

Host: Ubuntu 20.04 (recently upgraded from 18.04)

Guest: Windows 10 version 1909

Workstation Pro 15.5

I have a Bluetooth headset connected to the host. In Settings->Sound->Input (on the host) the headset is selected as the input device, and the dashed indicator shows that the mic is working.

In the Windows 10 guest, I can hear audio through the Bluetooth headset, but the microphone doesn't work. For example in Settings->System->Sound under "Test your microphone", the bar is completely gray (no sound).

Everything was working fine until today. This may have been the first time I tried using the headset on the Windows guest since I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04, but not certain of that.

Thanks in advance.

v6.7 Rollback

$

Hi guys,

We're planning to upgrade a vCenter instance from v6.0 to v6.7 (update 3). All the hosts we manage from this vCenter are all v6.0 hosts - various builds, vast majority of which are 3620759. We're not actively looking at upgrading the hosts to 6.7 just yet.

In the event of a failure, our rollback plan is to restore a backup of the vCenter host VM - that is, this vCenter installed on a Windows Server VM. Is there any reason to assume the hosts won't function as expected, in the event that we roll back vCenter in this way?

Any advise would be appreciated, thanks in advance

License req. to backup restore OS on ESXi?

Hi,

Sorry for starting with the probably most stupid Q.  I have just entered the world of ESXi and I have installed the first ESXi and a couple of OS's, and it's all working fine.

But for saftey reason, I would like to backup and restore the different OS's, and maybe even the whole disk!

Q1.  is that possible?

Q2. Is that possible with the free license or do I need full license to performe at least the first task (backup/restore an OS), or both (backup/restore the whole disk)?

VM Power Management : Standby Response

Hi,

1/ I'm looking for an elegant  way to list all my VMs Power Management Standby Response parameters; is it possible to automate that check (>800 VMs)?

vmware.jpg

2/ Unfortunately, we have two different configurations for the Stanby Response, Suspend OS for some Vms and Put the guest Os into standby mode. We did not configure manually this parameter, so how could we explain the different configuration? Did it depend from the OS type?

Thank you for your help,

2 or more network bridges in VMWare Workstation Player?

$

Hello everybody

Why can't I set up 2 or more network bridges in VMWare Workstation Player which are running in the background on different & independent phys. network adapters in the background?

Well, concrete example for a computer with 2 phys. Ethernet adapters:

- 1 port used (i.e. 1 cable connected): Set up bridge and good is

- 2 ports used (i.e. 2 cables attached) 2 bridges set up

--> But then I can't play different, independent phsy per bridge. Ethernet adapter... I choose for Bridge 1 the phsy. Adapter 1, this also applies to Bridge 2; if I choose phsy for Bridge 1, the phsy. Adapter 2 for Bridge 1, the same applies to Bridge 2

Even more strange: I can even play 2 or more phsy per bridge. adapters,... what should happen if x different DHCP servers are used by x different physical servers? adapters which are all redirected to ONE single VMWare bridge at the same time?

How weird is that?

Feature or bug? Anyway, VirtualBox is able to do something like that without any problems....

Thanks for the feedback! :-)

Pro Netzwerk-Bridge einen einzelnen phys. Adapter auswählen

Hallo zusammen

Ethernet-Adaptern:

- 1 Port verwendet (also 1 Kabel dran): Bridge einrichten und gut ist
- 2 Ports verwendet (also 2 Kabel dran) 2 Bridges einrichten
