Mapping network profiles to bussiness group
Hello community, I'm having some issues with VRA 7.2 involving business groups and network profiles, my issue is the one below:
Let's say I have a blueprint with a network attached to network profile "A" which is connected to VLAN 100.
Also I several business groups and we want that each one of them to deploy their VMs in its separate VLAN, so I have also several network profiles, with the relevant reservations, mapped to VLANs 200, 201, etc.
What I want to achieve is that with one catalog item, when a user from business group A requests a VM, I want that VM to be deployed in the BG assigned V-LAN, so far I've tried using these custom properties in the Business Group definition:
VirtualMachine.Network0.Name --> Network1-vlan200
VirtualMachine.Network0.ProfileName --> cloudnetwork2-vlan200
I can see that in the vCenter the VM is assigned to the right portgroup, nevertheless Vra won't assign an IP and the request ends without error.
I checked this blog: http://open902.com/vra7-customize-hostname-vlan-and-ip-during-deployment/ and it helped me a little but it won't solve my problem, because in my scenario my consumers should not modify the network assigment of their VMs.
How do solve this issue? Maybe you can give me a hint about what do you do in your environments.
Thanks in advance!
VC 6.5 Install failure - identity management service error on first boot
Is anyone else experiencing a failure when installing VC 6.5? I have this occuring when installing using the CLI installer, and when deploying the OVA using the ESXi web client.
The version of VC is 6.5.0 build 4240420, the recent release candidate.
The exception report looks like:

My group and I am curious to hear whether or not anyone else is experience this and if there are any workarounds.
Thanks!
Staged reboot of ESXi Hosts
Hi,
We have hundreds of stateless ESXi hosts which are AD joined. I need a staged reboot with 20 seconds between reboots for our ESXi Hosts as it reduces the impact of applying the profile and AD join at the same time. I wrote a simple script but cannot understand something others may find very simple...
Cluster=Get-ClusterclusterA
Get-Cluster$Cluster|Get-VMHost|ForEach-Object {
Restart-VMHost
Start-Sleep-Seconds20
}
The output of get-VMHost provides the following object which I understand is the type Restart-VMHost expects...
VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Impl.V1.Inventory.VMHostImpl
However the script fails... Value cannot be found for the mandatory parameter VMHost
Restart-VMHost does show the following...
Accept pipeline input? true (ByValue)
Cheers
Is it possible set default VM folder by cluster
Hello,
As you may know VMs are placed under datacenter or 'discovered virtual machine' folder by default when you create it.
Is there a way to set default VM folders by cluster?
For example, I have cluster1 and cluster2. I create a VM folder for each: cluster1-vm and cluster2-vm.
VMs are placed to respective VM folder automatically when user create VM in cluster.
Concurrent vm creation in esxi5.5 and esxi6

Port Group with Vlan tag will not work on second host in cluster
I have two ESXi 6.5 servers in a cluster, with a single NIC attached for all management, vMotion, and data connections at the moment. I am using hosts configured with the standard switch. The servers are in most respects configured identically, and the NICs for each are connected to a trunk port on my network that allow all vlans. For the first host, I can create port groups on the standard switch and assign vlan tags to them. When bound to a specific VM, the link works and they receive traffic from that vlan (dhcp services on that vlan assign IPs to the NIC, etc.). However, if I take the same VM and migrate it to the second host in the cluster, the only port group that works is the default one assigned to the management vlan. If I create a new port group with a vlan tag (the same tag used for the first host), and assign it to the same VM, then no traffic occurs (dhcp stops working, and all network activity times out for the subnets on that vlan). I'm somewhat perplexed. Both hosts have trunk ports to the physical network, the same physical NIC configuration in vSphere, the same VM Kernel configurations, the same vswitch0 standard switch configuration, with the same port group names and vlans. Any ideas on what might be going on?

NEW CPU (i7 6850K), New Motherboard (Asus ROG Strix X99) - VMWare Workstation 12.5.2 Not working after 10 re-install of Windows 10 Enterprise x64 v.1607
Here's the rub:
I installed Windows 10 Enterprise x64 v.1607 ten times. But every time VMWare Workstation is telling me that I cannot use it because "VMware and Hyper-V are not compatible. Remove Hyper-V role from system before running VMware."
I did 10 times a CLEAN install of Windows OS with latest updates, and NEVER activated Hyper-V, but each and every time VMWare Workstation is telling me this thing. What the hell is wrong? Is the CPU not supported yet, or the latest Windows 10 Enterprise x64 edition version 1607 messed up something? Can anyone from VMWare team tell me what is wrong?
My second issue is with OLD CPU and Motherboard- i7 3770K and Gigabyte Z77UD5H WiFi board. Since last 4.5 years everything was fine. I used Windows 7, 8 and 10 in this system and never had trouble with VMWare earlier editions. Now after latest update of WINDOWS 10 Enterprise x64 v.1607, I have started receiving a strange error. "64-bit guest OSes are not supported by this host." I wanted to ask smartest people of VMWare, what is wrong again? I am using x64 bit machine. CPU supports 64Bit OS's than what the hell is wrong now? This system is having 32GB of RAM and is working fine since ages, so what went wrong suddenly?
I don't know what is WRONG, but can somebody tell me what is going on?
Need some help guys.
i changed my rood user role administrator to virtual machine users. How to back administration role. Help me guys. I am using esxi 5.5. vsphere is Linux vmware.local 3.0.101-0.7.19. how can i solve this thing.

Is allow mix ESXi version in environment 6.0 and 6.5
Hello,
Existing I have 2 HV running with ESXi 6.0. Now, I am planing to setup another new HV and install ESXi 6.5 there.
Question:
Q. Is it allow to same datacenter with different ESXi version? They will have share storage pool as well.
Q. Is it allow to do live migration of VM which from ESXi 6.0 to 6.5? If cannot. Offline is support?
Q. How about reverse migration of VM from 6.5 to 6.0?
Thanks!
Why won't Esxi 6.5 not install on an older system?
I have a server with an Intel S5000VSA motherboard with dual Xeon 5150 CPUs each with 2 cores. This system is happily running Esxi 5.5 at the moment.
When I try to install or upgrade Esxi 6.5 I get a warning that while in will install on most platforms it is only supported by systems in the HCL. But during installation to a USB drive it fails with a message which from memoru says it needs the "No Memory Execution Protection" My BIOS contains an "Execute Disable Bit" which is enabled.
Why won't Esxi 6.5 not install?
Is VCP5+VCAP5-DCD+VCAP6-DCV Deploy enough to get VCIX6-DCV?
Hello,
In September 2016 I have completed (or thought I've completed) all requirements for VCIX6-DCV:
VCP5 + VCAP5-DCD in 2015 and VCAP6-DCV Deploy in September 2016, just after end of beta period.
Few days ago I've asked (just another time) support about not being able to see VCIX designation in my Transcript and Certification Manager. To my huge surprise, I was told that I have to upgrade VCP5 to VCP6. Is it true?
If it is - it's a bit unfair, don't you think? I mean, I have completed all the prerequisites BEFORE this new prerequsite.

Cheap ESXi host for home lab
So I got my evaluation license for ESXi 6.0 a while back and tried installing it on the various systems I had available (no real servers, alas.) Despite having some hardware that was top tier at one time, the only thing that ESXi would install cleanly on was an ancient consumer-grade Dell Inspiron 570. No problems with network or SATA drivers or VT-d/IOMMU, just installed - no muss, no fuss. However, this thing is pretty limited. It has a triple core processor, and maxes out at 16GB of RAM. Now I was looking online and saw some old Dell Precision workstations selling for peanuts. The models I was looking at were the T3500 and T5500, but I'm not sure if ESXi would install on either of those boxes. (I almost got one with a Xeon W3520, but researched that Xeon and found that it does not support VT-d.)
So I'm on a shoestring budget and can't afford a real server, but I might be able to swing one of these old workstations. A second option that occurred to me would be to upgrade the triple core processor in the Dell Inspiron 570 to an Athlon/Phenom quad CPU. However, the Xeon would have 4 actual cores plus 4 logical cores thanks to hyperthreading. And if I really wanted to, I could upgrade to a six-core/12 thread Xeon like the L5640.

VMware snapshot using CoW or RoW technology
Sorry for trouble again, not sure if this is correct category, moving this discussion from vCenter to vSphere.
hope get some help from you.
Hi, All
There is one question regarding VMware snapshot technology - CoW or RoW, confusing me for a long time, hope someone can help clarify this.
As we know that the difference between CoW and RoW is the location the changed data is written after a snapshot, like the snapshot space or original data area, for CoW, the changed data will be written to original data area instead of snapshot space after original data to be changed is copied to snapshot space, and for RoW, the changed data will be written to the space stores.
When take a snapshot for VMware, it creates some files, like delta disk files, .vmsd file, for delta disk files, it's a snapshot file and will store the changed data since last snapshot. So from this perspective, the snapshot technology VMware uses should be RoW, right?
However, from VMware guide or KB, we know that it uses CoW technology, as follows:
Understanding virtual machine snapshots in VMware ESXi and ESX (1015180) | VMware KB
The child disk
The child disk, which is created with a snapshot, is a sparse disk. Sparse disks employ the copy-on-write (COW) mechanism, in which the virtual disk contains no data in places, until copied there by a write. This optimization saves storage space. The grain is the unit of measure in which the sparse disk uses the copy-on-write mechanism. Each grain is a block of sectors containing virtual disk data. The default size is 128 sectors or 64 KB.
In addition, can anyone help explain the following snapshot chain regarding how it forms?
thanks
